FOUNDATION OF ORDEM DOS ENGENHEIROS
Ordem dos Engenheiro (OE) was founded in 24 November 1936 by Law-Secree 27288, and being the successor of the “Associação dos Engenheiros Civis Portugueses”, which foundation was in 1869.

According with its Statute, approved by Law-Decree nr.199/92, of 30 June the “Ordem dos Engenheiros” is independent from the state and has administrative, financial, scientifical, disciplinary and regulatory Autonomy.

STRUCTURES
The “Ordem dos Engenheiros” is structured in 2 levels: territorial and by specialities: In territorial (North, Center and South Regions, Madeira and Azores islands).
The specialities organised in 10 “Colégios” are: civil: electrotechnical, mechanical, mining, chemical, naval, geographic, agronomical, forestry, metallurgical. Now is also being created a “Colégio” and speciality on computers engineering.

MEMBERS
There are several classes of members: student members, effective members, probationer members, correspondent members and collective members. Number of members: 30.000.

RULLING AND ATTRIBUTION OF THE ENGINEER PROFESSIONAL TITLE
The engineering profession is strictly regulated in Portugal. The “Engenheiro” title is a professional title wich is awarded by the “Ordem dos Engenheiros”. All the “licenciados” may apply for the professional title of Engineer.

GENERAL DIRECTIVE ON THE RECOGNITION OF THE DIPLOMAS (89/48/EEC)
The Directive nr. 89/48/EEC of 21 December concerning the recognition of the higher level education was adopted by the Portuguese law through the decree nr. 289/91 of the 19th June. The “Ordem dos Engenheiros” is the competent authority.

SERVICES AND PUBLICATIONS
The “Ordem dos Engenheiros” is there for its members. Providing service and promoting the professional interests are therefore of primary importance. Members can appeal to a legal adviser for problems related to their professional activity or their degree. Besides there are material benefits such as discounts for vacancies, trips, hotels, medical, health. Within its headquarters there is a library with several magazines, journals and books.

There is also an office to support the recently graduated engineers and students.

Connected with the “Ordem dos Engenheiros” is a complementary service of “social services”.

Monthly is published a magazine “INGENIUM” distributed all over the world, which is an important way of divulgate the associative life as well as technical, scientific and professional activities, and performs Congresses, Meetings, Seminaries, Courses and the “DIA NACIONAL DO ENGENHEIRO” to award ancient members and others, as well as students who obtained the highest qualifications in their courses.

Anually, the “Ordem dos Engenheiros” publishes the “ANNUAIO” (the Engineers Guide, with the “Ordem” members).

It is also published the “ANAIS DE ENGENHARIA E TECNOLOGIA ELECTROTECNICA”, which concerns to all electrotechnical engineers.

The 3 Regions of the “Ordem dos Engenheiros” also publish “Information Bulletins”.

INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
The “Ordem dos Engenheiros” is associated with several international organizations, such as: CLAIU-EU, FEANI, FMOI, ECCE-European Committee of Civil Engineers, EUREL-Convention of National Societies of Electrical Engineers of Europe, CEDIA-Comité European des Ingénieurs Agronomes de la CEE, WEMT-West European Confederation of Maritime Technology Societies and ICHMT-International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer.

The “Ordem dos Engenheiros” holds Agreements with other international organizations.
