ENGINEERING EDUCATION
Since the constitutional reform of 1988, the regional communities constitute the legislative authorities for education.
1. In Belgium only the universities offer an engineering education of the highest level, i.e. the degree of “Master in de ingenieurswetenschappen/ Master en sciences de l’ingénieur et “Master in de bio-ingenieurswetenschappen/ Master en sciences agronomiques et l’ingénierie biologique, ingénieur (civil/ bio), (burgerlijk/bio-) ingenieur”, subdivided since 2003-2004 into two cycles: a first cycle of three years’ Bachelor study followed by a second cycle of two years’ Master study. The legal abbreviation is “Ir.”. Only the university Master graduated engineers are the object of the CLAIU-EU “MERCURIUS” REGISTER.
2. There are also two other levels of higher technical education, provided by the Institutes of higher technical education, which offer since 2003 – 2004 the following curricula:
- short type of education: one cycle of 3 years of professional Bachelor in industrial sciences and technology
- long type of Master degree education: 4 years (Flemish speaking community) or 5 years (French speaking community) subdivided into two cycles of three years of bachelor study followed by one or two years of Master study. Graduates bear the legally protected Master title of “industrieel ingenieur”/”ingénieur industriel”, legal abbreviation “Ing .”
