ENGINEERING EDUCATION SYSTEM

In Portugal there is a three cycle system in all areas as follows:

The engineering education organised at the Universities which provide the following degrees:

o   Licenciado, corresponding to a workload of 180-240 ECTS (6 to 8 semesters of work, full-time equivalent)

o   Mestre, corresponding to a further workload of 90-120 ECTS (a further 3 to 4 semesters) or through an integrated programme (in Universities) of a minimum of 300 ECTS (10 semesters).

o   Doutor, after a minimum of 3 years of course and research work.

The engineering education organised at the Polytechnic High Schools (Institutos Superiores Politécnicos) which provide the following degrees:

o   Licenciado, corresponding to a workload of 180-240 ECTS (6 to 8 semesters of work, full-time equivalent)

o   Mestre, corresponding to a further workload of 90-120 ECTS (a further 3 to 4 semesters) or through an integrated programme (in Universities) of a minimum of 300 ECTS (10 semesters).

The third cycle is restricted to the Universities.”
